Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) is an American singer, songwriter and pianist commonly referred to as "The Queen of Soul". Although renowned for her soul recordings, Franklin is also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop, R&B and Gospel music. In 2008, the American music magazine Rolling Stone ranked Franklin #1 on its list of The Greatest Singers of All Time.

Franklin is one of the most honored artists by the Grammy Awards, with 18 Grammys to date, which include the Living Legend Grammy and the Lifetime Achievement Grammy. She has scored a total of 20 #1 singles on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart, one of which also became her first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100: "Respect" (1967). "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" (1987), a duet with George Michael, became her second #1 on the latter chart. Since 1961, Franklin has scored a total of 45 "Top 40" hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 1987, Franklin became the first female artist to be entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Magic City Art Connection (MCAC) is a juried outdoor art show and festival that has been held annually at Linn Park since 1983, and currently the largest outdoor arts festival in the Southeast. The free event features local, regional and national artists as well as children's activities, performances, and special food events. The festival was founded and managed by Eileen Kunzman and is sponsored by Operation New Birmingham.

Celtic Women

Celtic Woman is a musical ensemble comprising five Irish female artists: vocalists Chloë Agnew, Lynn Hilary, Lisa Kelly, Alex Sharpe and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. The group's repertoire ranges from traditional Celtic tunes to modern songs. To date, the group has released four albums, Celtic Woman, Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration, Celtic Woman: A New Journey and Celtic Woman: The Greatest Journey and have undertaken a number of world tours.

Winter Jam Tour Spectacular, also referred to as simply Winter Jam (and formerly known as January Jam from 1995–2000), is an annual American music tour featuring Christian rock, Christian rap, and contemporary Christian music bands, stunt and/or comedy performances, and a speaker. It is the United States' largest annual Christian Music Tour. It has also provided a platform for non-profit groups such as Holt International, an organization that provides sponsorship and adoption for orphans.

Conceived and created in 1995 as "January Jam" by CCM group Newsong, Winter Jam has run annually since 1995. From its inception in 1995 through the most recent 2009 tour, the Winter Jam Tour Spectacular has toured all over the United States of America. Tickets are not required for the tour, as a US$10 general admission is collected at the door of each arena.

The Birmingham area has premiered exhibitors spring collections for the past few years. Over 1 million dollars in sales reported for this 3-day event last year. This gathering of carefully selected arts & crafts exhibitors, display and sell their newest spring merchandise. The convention center is turned into a village brimming with handmade crafts and delicious food samples!

The Bassmaster Classic is a competition in professional bass fishing. It was first held in 1971 in Lake Mead, Nevada. After years of being held in July, the Bassmaster Classic was moved to February in 2006. The competition has been held in Birmingham 6 times, and will return in 2010.

The event has turned into a three-day spectacle, complete with a theatrical presentation of the weigh-ins and hours of television coverage. The purchase of the Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society (BASS), which organizes the event, and coverage by ESPN has increased the Classic's profile.

First-place money has grown from $10,000 in 1971 to $500,000 in 2006.

The Mercedes Marathon is an annual February running event, founded in 2002 by Valerie McLean. The event attracts athletes from across the United States and around the world to take part in the 26.22 mile race through the streets of both Birmingham and portions of Homewood and Mountain Brook. The weekend event also features a half marathon, a kids' marathon and a 5K as part of the event

She has made several appearances on Larry King Live, was a weekly guest on The Montel Williams Show, and hosts her own hour-long show on Hay House Radio, discussing paranormal issues and giving callers advice in her role as a "psychic".

Since their album Elephunk in 2003, the group's hip hop/dance-oriented style has sold an estimated 28 million albums worldwide and 31 million singles. John Clayton Mayer ,born October 16, 1977, is an American musician. Originally from Connecticut, he attended Berklee College of Music before moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1997, where he refined his skills and gained a following. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award for "Your Body Is a Wonderland".

Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock, but gradually began a transition towards the blues genre in 2005 by collaborating with renowned blues artists such as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton, and by forming the John Mayer Trio. The blues influence can be heard on his album Continuum, released in September 2006. At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007 Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change". Mayer's career pursuits have extended to stand-up comedy, design, and writing; he has written pieces for magazines, most notably for Esquire. He is also involved in philanthropic activities through his "Back to You" fund and his concern over global warming.

Brad Douglas Paisley (born October 28, 1972) is a Grammy Award-winning American country music singer-songwriter and virtuoso country guitarist. His style crosses between traditional country and pop-rock, and his songs are frequently laced with humor and pop culture references.

Paisley is the reigning 2008 CMA and ACM Male Vocalist of the Year winner and one of the most popular acts in country music. Starting with the release of his 1999 album Who Needs Pictures, Paisley has recorded seven studio albums and a Christmas compilation on the Arista Nashville label, with all of his albums certified gold or higher by the RIAA. Birmingham Feline Fanciers Cat Show

The Birmingham Feline Fanciers is a CFA Cat Club that puts on CFA Cat Shows on the last weekend of January at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center (BJCC). These shows typically include from 225 to 275 pedigree cats and 20-50 household pets. The club also features a feline art show with exhibits provided by local high school students from the Birmingham area. The feline art for the January 2009 show will be judged by a team of local experts. Ribbons are awarded to all participants and very nice prizes (including cash prizes) awarded to top entries. The Ringling Brothers Circus was a circus founded in the United States in 1884. Ringling Brothers Circus eventually joined with the Barnum & Bailey Circus to become "Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, the Greatest Show on Earth".

The Circus was founded by seven Ringling brothers, Albert (1852-1916), August (1854-1907), Otto (1858-1911), Alfred T. (1862-1919), Charles (1863-1926), John (1866-1936), and Henry (1869-1918).
